TPU Materials for Laminated Glass

1. Brief Introduction to TPU

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is a class of thermoplastic elastomer materials with both rubber elasticity and plastic processing performance. It features high tensile strength, excellent tear resistance, outstanding low-temperature toughness, strong adhesion to glass, good light transmittance, weather resistance and aging resistance. Unlike traditional PVB interlayer films for laminated glass, TPU has unique advantages in ultra-thick laminated glass, curved architectural glass, bulletproof glass and new energy vehicle glass, gradually becoming a high-performance alternative interlayer material.

2. Core Advantages of TPU Interlayer for Laminated Glass

  1. Superior Low-Temperature Performance

    TPU maintains softness and impact resistance at temperatures as low as -40°C without brittleness, while PVB tends to harden and lose safety performance under extremely cold conditions. It is suitable for high-latitude cold regions and vehicle glass used in severe cold environments.

  2. High Adhesion & Penetration Resistance

    TPU forms stable bonding with soda-lime glass, tempered glass and coated glass after hot pressing lamination. When glass breaks, the TPU film tightly wraps glass fragments to prevent splashing and injury, providing reliable anti-spalling safety effect. It also resists penetration by hard objects, greatly improving anti-impact and anti-burglary performance.

  3. Excellent Weather & UV Aging Resistance

    Modified transparent TPU interlayer contains UV stabilizers, which can block over 99% ultraviolet rays. It hardly turns yellow after long-term outdoor exposure, effectively protecting indoor furniture, vehicle interiors and human skin from UV damage. Its hydrolysis resistance outperforms ordinary PVB, extending the service life of outdoor laminated glass.

  4. Flexible Processing & Special Molding Adaptability

    TPU has good thermoplastic fluidity, compatible with flat glass, large curved glass, hyperbolic architectural curtain wall glass and 3D automotive curved glass. It supports thermoforming at medium temperature, and can produce ultra-thick composite laminated safety glass with multi-layer glass and multi-layer TPU film, widely used in bulletproof, explosion-proof and anti-riot glass.

  5. Sound Insulation & Damping Effect

    TPU possesses good viscoelastic damping properties, which can absorb medium and high-frequency noise. Laminated glass with TPU interlayer achieves higher sound insulation rating, ideal for noise-sensitive scenarios such as high-speed rail windows, luxury car windshields and urban residential curtain walls.

3. Main Application Scenarios of TPU Laminated Glass

(1) New Energy Automobile Glass

TPU interlayer is widely applied to panoramic sunroofs, front windshields, side windows and rear windscreens of new energy vehicles. Its lightweight property reduces vehicle body weight to improve cruising range; outstanding low-temperature toughness adapts to all-climate driving; meanwhile, its high sound insulation optimizes NVH performance of new energy vehicles.

(2) Architectural Safety & Decorative Glass

  • Large curved curtain wall glass for commercial buildings, stadiums and landmark architectures;
  • Anti-explosion, anti-burglary safety glass for banks, museums, exhibition halls and high-end villas;
  • Ultra-large super-thick laminated sightseeing glass for observation decks and aerial platforms.

(3) Bulletproof & Explosion-Proof Protective Glass

Multi-layer composite TPU laminated glass is the core material of bulletproof, anti-strike and explosion-proof glass for military vehicles, police cars, security booths and confidential office spaces. Compared with PVB laminated bulletproof glass, TPU composite structure has lighter weight and higher impact energy absorption capacity.

(4) Transportation Special Glass

Used for high-speed train, subway, yacht and aircraft observation window glass, meeting strict requirements of vibration resistance, temperature difference resistance and long-term aging resistance in transportation fields.

4. Processing Technology of TPU Laminated Glass

The mainstream production process is hot-press autoclave lamination:
  1. Cut clean glass sheets and TPU films according to specifications;
  2. Assemble glass and TPU interlayer neatly, exhaust air between layers to avoid bubbles;
  3. Send the assembly into an autoclave, heat up to 100–140°C under pressure for thermal bonding;
  4. Cool down and finish trimming, inspection to obtain finished TPU laminated glass.
TPU can also be co-laminated with PVB for composite interlayers to balance cost and high-performance demands for mid-end glass products.

5. Development Prospect

With the rapid growth of new energy automobile industry and the rising demand for high-performance architectural safety glass, transparent functional TPU film has become a key upgraded material in the laminated glass industry. Through formula modification, low-yellowing, high-transmittance, high-modulus TPU interlayer products will further expand market share, replacing traditional interlayer materials in high-end safety glass fields.
